Recipes on the go

Cooks in restaurant areas need quick and reliable access to the right recipes. The existing web app struggled with usability and adoption was low. Different meal sizes required adjusted ingredient quantities, but the tool didn’t make this easy. To better support day-to-day kitchen operations, Areas decided to move from a web app to a native Android app with offline data capabilities, ensuring every cook can access accurate recipe information anytime, anywhere.

Challenges vs. solution

Challenges

  • The legacy web app was rarely used due to poor usability

  • Managers were the only ones able to log in, limiting access for kitchen staff

  • Recipe data had to be aggregated from SAP DMS and SAP ECC

  • The existing setup didn’t fit the real-world needs of cooks working on the go

Solution benefits

  • Intuitive, user-friendly interface for cooks

  • Offline access to recipes anytime, anywhere

  • Unified data from SAP DMS and ECC

  • Real-time updates and secure data sharing

  • Streamlined workflows with fewer errors

About the solution

Together with Amista, Areas designed and developed a brand-new Android app built with the SAP BTP SDK for Android. The focus was on user experience, making the interface intuitive, visual and optimised for kitchen workflows.

The app uses offline OData to keep recipes available even without internet access and leverages a wrapper OData service on SAP BTP to combine data from SAP DMS and SAP ECC into one unified view. Only managers log in, while data is securely shared with cooks, ensuring access is both simple and controlled.

The best SAP BTP technology partner to work with. Fully committed team, added value driven and wonderful people.

Architecture

The app architecture ensures smooth interaction between the mobile client, SAP BTP Mobile Services, and backend systems. Requests are routed via recipes-proxy-srv CAP Application, with document management handled by Document Management Service and ECC data accessed through Connectivity Service using the Cloud Connector.
