Companies want to achieve value by finding a balance between the performance of each asset, the cost of that performance, and the risk exposure it brings. Risks include impacts on people's health and safety, noncompliance with environmental regulations, unplanned downtime and failures, and exceeded spend and effort due to over-maintenance. Many still rely on fixed-interval preventive maintenance strategies to reduce the risks of failing equipment. In turn, it might lead to planning too much servicing. Meanwhile, running a noncritical or redundant asset until failure lends little regard to quantitative risk or asset health.
